The Rite (1969)

A film by Ingmar Bergman . With Ingrid Thulin , Björnstrand Gunnar, Erik Hell , Andres Ek , Ingmar Bergman Original title retention. Drama , b / w 72 min duration. - Sweden 1967-69.
Three players advanced - a man, his wife, her lover - end up before a judge for a show-censor accused of obscenity.

Perfect. Surgically, scientifically, clinically perfect. It looks like a game of cards, a technical scheme of a football game, poker, double, a precise mathematical scheme to all'inimmaginabile.
A game played on the surreal but at the same time ipereale. What is "The Rite"? And 'anti-moral, is the anti-justice, but not the denial of both the absolute rejection of them. What on earth is justice after all, is a mechanism created by man to judge, stop, regulate, but it is an imperfect system of rules, too weak, fragile exposed to any manipulation.
Four characters, each in relation to the other with a total of twelve different reports divided into nine scenes, all different, all shades, ways, assumptions, intentions, different purposes. A perfect building for a moral critique of the practically perfect.
But even more fascinating is the exposure of these twelve reports, as are intertwined and what they produce: far away from clichés, dogmas, bogeys, human interactions are uprooted from everyday life and put in an extraordinary and are still amazing to see how exactly the same and understand how to remain the same despite different situations.
This makes it impossible for the act of judging, this makes absolutely useless and opens the door to the relative. Bergman knows that life is a gray scale (the faithful entrusted photography Sven Nykvist) and a castle built on this principle of the inapplicability of the nuances in which justice is materialized in a pagan symbol of materiality uamana. Matter and mind living in a community too often denied by the common conventions, Bergman destroy this wall and let the idea becomes the subject. The obscene is nothing but the human body, the lust, the expression of their sexuality repressed by prejudice and a desire that is released when it becomes fact, "obscene". Bergman from one dimension to all this in five minutes and with only a few items: a mask, a foul, a bowl of wine. This is the ritual: three elements that are formed depending on what you want to see, even your own defeat and death.
One of his most fascinating, most complex, most airtight. The darkest point of his career, even more ruthless and more fierce.
